Lead Singer Syndrome

Lead Singer Syndrome (with Shane Told) is a podcast where 15 year touring veteran Shane Told (of Silverstein) interviews other lead singers to talk about what it's really like to front a professional, touring, Rock 'n Roll band.

EPISODE 15: Will Pugh (Cartel)

Cartel's Will Pugh sits down with Shane for Episode 15.  He talks about Cartel's extremely fast blow up during their first album, how they were never able to top the success, and also dishes all the dirt on the infamous MTV "Band In A Bubble" where Cartel wrote and recorded their entire second album in a "Bubble" in New York City.

EPISODE 14: Tyler "Telle" Smith (The Word Alive, Ex-In Fear And Faith, Ex-Greeley Estates)

Shane sits down with his buddy Telle Smith of The Word Alive and they discuss:
-Moving to California to "join the industry"
-His audition with Blessthefall
-His days in former bands In Fear and Faith and Greeley Estates
-Faking knowing how to scream in A Word Alive at first
-His brother stabbing him when he was 8
-Fully breaking his back stagediving, yet cancelling zero shows
-Where he gets his nickname "Telle"

EPISODE 12: Spencer Chamberlain (Underoath, Sleepwave)

On the first episode of this special Underoath 2-part "Mini-Series", I sit down with Spencer Chamberlain, frontman of the band, and mostly known for his screaming.  But as a very competent singer, did he feel like he should have done more clean vocals in the early days of the band?  He talks about that, his new band Sleepwave, how the Underoath reunion came about, and how mad he was when they broke up.

Bonus:  Shane starts drinking again

EPISODE 11: Adam Lazzara (Taking Back Sunday)

Adam Lazzara of Taking Back Sunday joined me for a great talk about the early days of the band, reuniting the original lineup, struggles with being in a band and fatherhood, and how he's still "getting a handle" on his voice.  Bonus:  Shane talks about his new solo project "River Oaks".

EPISODE 10: Toby Morrell (Emery)

I sat down with my old pal Toby from Emery... our discussions include Toby being a late bloomer, turning 40, dealing with 2 lead singers in one band, and the mistakes Emery made early in their career.  Does Toby think Devin is a better singer than him?  Listen and find out.

EPISODE 9: Beau Bokan (blessthefall)

Beau came over to my apartment one afternoon while his wife, pop star Lights was doing a soundcheck before her Toronto show.  We talk about her, his new daughter, his early days growing up, and what it was like to replace an already established lead singer in an already established band.

EPISODE 8: Jason Butler (letlive.)

Happy New Year Everybody!  Shane talks to the always entertaining Jason Butler from "letlive." about growing up in South Central Los Angeles, his recent marriage to another lead singer, "trust" from other bandmates and their ideal studio environment.  Shane and Jason discuss their favorite "crazy" Jason moments from his notorious on-stage antics.  Bonus:  Shane messes up and accidentally reveals the new letlive. album title.

EPISODE 7: Pierre Bouvier (Simple Plan)

A self admitted 'Private Person', Pierre sits down with me for a super open discussion about his personal life, his sometimes rocky relationship with fellow band member Chuck, and says he feels like a fraud every day.  Did you know Pierre used to be in a political punk band and toured with bands like Strung Out and Ten Foot Pole when he was 17?  A very eye opening and informative episode, and another must-listen.  -Shane

EPISODE 6: Jake Luhrs (August Burns Red)

I sat down with the Grammy nominated "lead screamer" twice!  Once back on Warped Tour, and once just a few days ago over the phone.  We talk about their "shocking" Grammy nomination, Gay rights in the metal and Christian community, his rough upbringing, singing versus screaming, and a lot more.

EPISODE 5: Buddy Nielsen (Senses Fail)

I sit down with Buddy Nielsen from Senses Fail, who 1 year ago came out as identifying as queer, admitted to being an alcoholic, and a sex addict.  Now over a year sober, and more political than ever, we talk about everything from hockey to gun control to repressed memories and Buddy's dislike of Texas.  We also bring up Senses Fail's past, and the infamous "Ass Pass".  This episode checks all the boxes.
